The South Central Kansas Library was officially established on June 17, 1967. Kathleen Whitmer of Zenda was among the “pioneer” board members of the original 37 public libraries that petitioned the State Library Advisory Commission, Topeka to form the South Central Kansas Library System. Whitmer was contacted by SCKLS Director Paul Hawkins in April 2017. She responded “50 years have gone by quickly, and oh the changes we’ve seen. I am so proud of our SCKLS. We’ve grown & improved & been a real blessing to our part of Kansas.”
As part its 50th anniversary of service to member libraries and citizen and students of Kansas, SCKLS is asking for your help in finding contact information for any board members of the original 37 public libraries that petitioned for SCKLS establishment in 1967. SCKLS will then contact the board member by letter and acknowledge and thank them for their service. Currently SCKLS has 72 public library members so if your public library isn’t listed among the original 37 it is because some public libraries joined SCKLS at later dates.
The original 37 public libraries included Argonia, Arkansas City, Arlington, Belle Plaine, Buhler, Burrton, Canton, Clearwater, Colwich, Derby, Douglass, El Dorado, Hardtner, Hutchinson, Inman, Kingman, Kiowa, Leon, Little River, Lyons, McPherson, Marquette, Medicine Lodge, Mount Hope, Mulvane, Newton, Nickerson, Norwich, Partridge, Potwin, Pretty Prairie, Sterling, Walton, Wichita, Winfield and Zenda. For a list of board members for the previous public libraries go to: http://sckls.info/DocumentCenter/View/1753 Please note: Board members for the Wichita Public Library are not identified.
SCKLS welcomes contact information for public library board members who were part of the establishment of SCKLS in 1967 as well as any information about SCKLS history. Please send information in care of Paul Hawkins, SCKLS Director, 321 North Main Street, South Hutchinson, KS 67505 or e-mail email@example.com.
