Digitization
Digitization Services

SCKLS services include project planning, training and grant support for digitization projects.

Digitization encompasses a variety of methods for creating digital representations of print, audio, video, or three-dimensional objects.  Almost anything can be digitized, but common materials include:

  • Diaries and letters
  • Photographs
  • Postcards and ephemera
  • Maps
  • Audio and video
  • Objects and artifacts

(Newspaper digitization is not included in the scope of this project.  Please contact us for additional information.)

Libraries may be custodians of unique local history or other information; these collections, even if they are very small, may be good candidates for a digitization project.  Digitization can:

  • Provide access by a wide audience to local materials
  • Protect the originals from damage by handling
  • Prompt a review of storage and preservation
  • Provide a form of backup in case the original deteriorates or is lost or damaged

Planning a digitization project of any size involves many considerations:

  • Purpose of the project
  • Scope and selection of materials
  • Copyright and permissions
  • Funding
  • Grant opportunities
  • Equipment and workspace
  • Staffing and workflow
  • Standards in production and metadata
  • File storage and backup
  • Local or online access
  • Online platform (Content Management System)
  • Marketing
  • Project maintenance or expansion
