POINTS PRESENTED
AT TECH DAY
1. KAN-ED is still
accepting applications. [See below links for further information]
2. “By signing
up for KAN-ED you are under NO obligations.” * Jerry Niebaum
3. KAN-ED will file
E-Rate for ONLY the Internet 2 portion of KAN-ED. That means that you
will remain responsible for your own E-Rate just as you have been in the
past.
4. KAN-ED monies MAY
be available in the future to assist in subsidizing your ISP costs in
addition to E-Rate monies you may receive. [See projected FY2004 subsidies
under Subsidies link below].
5. You can withdraw
from KAN-ED at any time.
6. Libraries using
dial-up service can still sign up for KAN-ED with no obligation to upgrade
to a high-speed connection right away. If you choose to become an active
participant in KAN-ED you will need to upgrade your Internet Connectivity
to a dedicated high-speed connection. The cost of this upgrade and service
is the local libraries responsibility, however you may be eligible for
E-Rate funding and/or KAN-ED subsidies in the future.
WHAT DO I GET FROM KAN-ED?
According to KAN-ED
documentation, KAN-ED members will be able to:
1. Access information
resources licensed for use for all KAN-ED users.
[These databases have yet to be determined].
2. Share information
resources with libraries in Kansas without competing with traffic on the
commercial Internet.
[Direct connection with state resources through KAN-ED backbone].
3. Share in-service
training between libraries.
[If you have the proper equipment for interactive education… i.e.
ITV Lab].
4. Access resources
at education service centers independent of the commercial Internet.
5. Connect to nationwide
learning resources on Internet2, the private research and education network.
